Successful SpaceX Rocket Launch: Rheinmetall Italia S.p.A. and Argotec Deploy First Satellite for Military Air Defence Surveillance Into Orbit
Rheinmetall has reached a crucial milestone in its new strategic partnership with the Italian space company Argotec: On October 1, 2026, the first satellite developed as part of this collaboration was successfully launched into orbit on board a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, USA.
With this successful launch, the Düsseldorf-based technology group, through its subsidiary Rheinmetall Italia SpA and in close coordination with institutional stakeholders, is initiating the targeted development of an independent, satellite-based capability for national security and military situational awareness. This successful launch represents a significant milestone for Rheinmetall's growing activities in the space sector.
Focus on airspace surveillance and system integration
Launched on October 1, 2026, the satellite program focuses on intelligence gathering rather than traditional mapping of ground objects. Instead, the orbiting satellite's sensors identify ground-based indicators of emerging airborne threats, providing critical early warning intelligence and data essential for air defense. The captured situational and imagery data is processed using AI for seamless integration into national defense and air defense systems and made directly available to customers. The system combines various functional layers, including space-based observation, ground-based nodes, and tactical networks, all managed through a state-of-the-art command and control center, to meet next-generation defense and security requirements and enable intelligence superiority missions.
With Argotec, Rheinmetall has found an industrial partner with extensive experience from NASA and other leading international space programs. Both partners are using the current mission success to validate their respective technical capabilities in real-world applications and subsequently advance them further through stepwise joint development.
Key element of a future satellite constellation
“The successful launch of our first satellite is a milestone in strengthening national security and space capabilities ,” says Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG. “The integration of space-based data into existing defense architectures is a crucial step to meet the demands of the changing security environment. This collaboration confirms the confidence in our expertise in technological integration and makes a significant contribution to technological sovereignty as well as to resilient, networked situational awareness.”
“The successful launch of this satellite is an important milestone in building next-generation space infrastructure tailored to operational and defense policy requirements,” said David Avino, CEO and founder of Argotec. “Together with Rheinmetall, we are transforming space technology into a valuable operational resource – scalable, networked, and ready to support complex defense scenarios. This is a significant step toward greater technological autonomy, as we convert data into near real-time information that supports decision-makers.”
The medium- to long-term program is structured according to a modular approach. The successful launch provides the technological foundation for validating operational functionality in orbit and securing subsequent funding phases.
Building on this initial capability, the space-based component will be gradually expanded into a more comprehensive satellite constellation. A further satellite launch is already firmly scheduled in the program roadmap for 2028.
